The difference between a refresh rate of 60Hz and 120Hz is huge. If you want a gaming laptop that gives you the advantage of a 120Hz screen, get the ASUS ROG STRIX G G531G-TAL236T. It comes with a 15.6” Full HD screen that has a 120Hz refresh rate. For First Person Shooter (FPS) games, this is an essential feature.
Similar to the other gaming laptops we recommend, this ASUS ROG SRIX G has very impressive specifications from its CPU to the graphics card. The problem with high-performance laptops is that they often get heated up very fast. However, ASUS solves this problem with its Intelligent Cooling philosophy. The design of the laptop itself is incorporated with multiple venting zones to facilitate proper airflow. Together with its Dual N-Blade fans, this allows the laptop to stay cool even when maximizing its performance. A cool laptop will help keep it in optimal working condition for a longer time.
You will also love its built-in keyboard. It has a super-quick response time with curved ergonomic keycaps that makes each keypress feel like quality. With its 4-zone RGB lighting, it adds to the cool factor of your laptop. The one small downside to this laptop is that it comes with only 4GB of RAM. However, it doesn’t cost much money or effort to add an 8GB stick of RAM in which will immediately eliminate this downside.
Given that this ASUS ROG STRIX G gaming laptop comes with a 120Hz screen, we find its price extremely attractive. Combined with its other specifications, this is one of the best buys for a mid to top-tier gaming laptop.

There is also the NitroSense overlay which lets you monitor your laptop temperatures and fan speeds.
We are also impressed with the high-quality speakers on the Acer Nitro 5. With two synergistic audio technologies of the Waves MaxxAudio and Acer TrueHarmony, it brings the audio experience to a whole new level. Whether you are playing games or watching videos, the audio clarity and bass are amazing.

Cheap gaming laptop

- Good processor & graphics component
- Lightweight at just 2.23kg
Key specifications – CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-9300H 2.4Ghz | Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 | Display: 15.6” Full HD IPS Anti-glare | RAM: 4 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM | Storage: 1 TB 5400 RPM SATA | Weight: 2.23kg | Battery: 3-cell, 52.5Wh
If you’re looking for an alternative to the affordable ASUS TUF, you’ll be happy to know that the HP Gaming Pavilion 15-DK0010TX Laptop is even cheaper. It has mid-tier specifications which are good enough for your gaming needs. It is powered by the Intel i5 processor and has the NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics card.
It is packed into a lightweight design of just 2.23kg which makes it one of the most portable gaming laptops. Because of its low price, there are some tradeoffs you have to make. It does not have an SSD storage instead it has a 1TB HDD. This will mean longer load up times especially when turning on the computer. The second tradeoff is its 4GB of RAM. To be honest, we feel that you should have at least 8GB of RAM nowadays. So in our opinion, this RAM situation isn’t the most optimal setup.
Again, the reason for these tradeoffs is because of its very low price point, which is half the price of other gaming laptops. If you think you can handle these two small bottlenecks, then the HP Gaming Pavilion 15-DK0010TX Laptop would be a very good value buy.

- Extremely powerful processor & graphics
- 144Hz lag-free display
- Futuristic design
Key specifications – CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-9750H 2.6GHz Processor | Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2060 Graphics | Display: 15.6” Full HD Anti-glare IPS 144Hz | RAM: 8 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM | Storage: 256GB SSD & 1TB HDD | Weight: 3.84kg | Battery: 6-cell 69 Wh
The HP Omen 15-DH0038TX is built for intense gaming. When you look at its specification sheet, you’ll notice that every single aspect is basically the best you can get – from its processor to its screen. It can rival almost any desktop out there. The one downside is that it does weigh more than regular laptops. With a 3.84kg weight, it is not the most portable option, but the better specs are worth the extra weight.
This HP Omen Laptop uses the 9th Gen Intel Core i7 processor that is paired with the top-of-the-line NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2060. With those two, you can enjoy buttery smooth graphics for the latest released games. Those ultra-sharp graphics will be piped to a 15.6-inch screen that has a 144Hz refresh rate which is virtually lag-free.
We also like that there are two different storage hard disks. There is a 256GB SSD which will allow you to start up Windows and your favourite games speedily. Also, you get a 1TB HDD which is great for storing large files like your movies and TV shows. This aspect allows the HP Omen Laptop to become a gaming and entertainment powerhouse.
With a price tag of RM6299, this HP Omen Gaming Laptop is definitely not cheap. But as you can see, it has very powerful specs that will elevate your gaming experience to the maximum. If you want the best, this will fit your requirements well.

Best lightweight gaming laptop
- Ultra-thin and light at just 1.86kg
- Good battery life of up to 7+ hours
- Available at an affordable price point
Key specifications – CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-9300H Processor | Graphics: Nvidia GeForce® GTX 1650 MAX-Q, 4GB GDDR5 | Display: 15.6” Full HD IPS | RAM: 4GB DDR4 2666Mhz RAM | Storage: 512GB SSD | Weight: 1.86kg

Most gaming laptops weigh more than 2kg with most reaching the 3kg mark. This lightweight but powerful laptop offers you the flexibility of bringing it around with you. In fact, you can even use it as both your work and office laptop.
While you can play the latest games on this laptop, its mid-tier specifications do mean that there are some limitations to its performance. You will likely need to switch the graphics settings from ultra-high to high for smoother gameplay. We are also slightly disappointed with the 4GB instead of an 8GB RAM. However, in real-life performance, you won’t have too many complaints as it still runs any programs smoothly.
Another positive note for this MSI GF63 Laptop is its price. It ranks amongst one of the cheapest full-fledged gaming laptops in Malaysia at under RM2900. If you want a budget-friendly and portable gaming laptop, this is the one to check out!

Things to consider when buying a gaming laptop in Malaysia
Graphics card
In the past, the graphics card used to be one of the limiting factors that prevent gaming PCs from matching up to PCs. Nowadays, that is no longer the case. Every gaming laptop now has a dedicated graphics card instead of an integrated setup. A dedicated graphics card is important as it allows you to experience smooth gameplay. There are two main brands of graphics card – NVIDIA and AMD. NVIDIA cards are more common and popular. Currently, the most powerful NVIDIA graphics card for laptop is the GTX2080 model. Having this model will allow your gaming laptop to rival top-range gaming PCs. However, this does not mean you have to get a laptop with the GTX2080. Lower range models like the GTX2060 or even GTX1060 would enable you to play the latest games with no lag.
CPU
You can think of the computer processor (CPU) as the brain of the laptop. It processes everything that happens in your laptop be it playing a game, opening a document or editing a video. As you can tell, the CPU is another crucial aspect you need to consider when choosing which gaming laptop to buy. Similar to the graphics card, there are two leading brands which dominate the CPU market – Intel and AMD. Most of the gaming laptops come with an Intel Core Processor. Currently, the Intel Core Processors are in the 10th Generation. For gaming purposes, we recommend getting a CPU has the equivalent processing power of an Intel Core i5. If you require higher processing power, an i7 model may be more suitable. Some of the laptops we recommend also carry the 9th Generation Intel Core Processors. They are generally more affordable but do not differ that much in terms of performance. For budget hunters, going one generation in terms of processors will help you save between RM400 to RM1000.
RAM
Random Access Memory, more commonly known as RAM is the third most important specification in determining the performance of a gaming laptop. RAM is a temporary memory that is utilized in the short-term to speed up processes. The bare minimum of RAM that you need for gaming is 4GB. Our recommendation is to get a laptop with at least 8GB. The good thing about RAM is that most laptops have a spare RAM slot for you to easily upgrade the amount of RAM. You can make the jump from 4GB to 8GB or even from 8GB to 16GB rather easily. Buying an additional stick of RAM is also pretty inexpensive, so you don’t need to worry too much if the laptop you’re buying has only 4GB of RAM.
Storage space
There are two main types of storage spaces – Solid State Drive (SSD) and Hard Disk Drive (HDD). SSDs are preferred to HDDs because of their speed, durability and low power consumption. With an SSD, you’ll load up Windows and any programs much faster. You’ll find that many gaming laptops come with an SSD with a minimum of 256GB to 1TB of storage. Games nowadays do take up quite a bit of space with some as high as 100GB. Therefore, we recommend a minimum storage capacity of 256GB or 500GB. There are also some gaming laptops which come with both an HDD and SSD. The configuration is usually a 128GB SSD with 1TB HDD. On such an arrangement, you would install your operating system and regularly played games on the SSD portion. For the HDD portion, you’ll usually store large video files, documents and even some less-regularly played games.
Battery life
Gaming laptops are not known for their long battery life. Gaming uses up a lot of battery in a short amount of time because it pushes your processor and graphics card to their maximum capabilities. As such, you’ll find that most gaming laptops can only last between 3 to 5 hours when gaming. The typical battery size ranges from 40Wh to 70Wh. A larger battery is usually heavily, which affects the portability of your laptop. If you’re looking to game for long hours, you’ll likely need to bring your charger along with you.
Screen display and resolution
There are two common screen sizes for gaming laptops which are 15 or 17-inches. In general, a larger screen is better for gaming. However, a larger screen also means an increase in weight. For portability, a 15-inch screen would be the best option. If you’re using your gaming laptop has a permanent spot at home, then we would recommend going for a 17-inch display.
In terms of resolution, Full HD 1920 by 1080p is the standard. Increasingly, there are more gaming laptops which are coming with 2560 by 1440p and even 4K resolutions of 3840 by 2160p. In our opinion, because the screen on a gaming laptop is relatively small, you don’t really need a 4K screen as of now, especially when the price is very expensive.
If you play First-Person Shooter (FPS) games, you’ll know how vital refresh rates are. The most common refresh rate is the standard 60Hz. A growing number of gaming laptops are now equipped with 144Hz displays. The difference in performance between a 144Hz and 60Hz display is massive. However, they are also more expensive. If you are looking to buy a laptop for FPS gaming, we highly recommend considering one with a 144Hz display.
Weight & portability
One of the key reasons why you want a gaming laptop is because it is portable. Unlike a gaming PC, you can bring a gaming laptop around with you. There are many portable gaming laptops available in Malaysia that weigh around 1.8kg to 2.5kg. If you get a laptop within this weight group, you’ll be able to carry it around with you to work, school or even on an overseas holiday. For a lighter and more compact gaming laptop, there are usually some tradeoffs. It’ll usually have a smaller battery, smaller display and may also have less powerful specifications.
There are some gaming laptops which are meant to be replacements of gaming PCs. Because they have larger monitors and more powerful specifications, they are usually much heavier and are between 3kg to 5kg. These larger and heavier gaming laptops are good if you don’t plan to bring the laptop around on a daily basis.
Keyboard
Whether you’re playing an MMORPG, FPS, RTS or MOBA game, you’ll use the keyboard. Therefore, the keyboard needs to have a nice feel, quick reaction and also look good. Most gaming laptops come equipped with RGB lighting which can be customized to amp up the cool factor. They are also comfortable to use for long periods of gaming. However, not many come with mechanical keys. That is one downside to gaming laptops because fitting it with mechanical keys would make it more heavy and less portable.
Can it be upgraded?
When you buy a gaming laptop, most of the parts are soldered on which means it usually cannot be upgraded. One exception as previously mentioned is the RAM. A good proportion of gaming laptops come with an extra RAM slot which makes it upgradeable. As the rest of the components cannot be upgraded, you should choose one that has the specifications which can last you at least 3 years.
